CATHANCE RIVER NATURE PRESERVE

Small Research Map Icon Return to Research Map Native American Ecology

Our geo/ecology class participated in the Native American Ecology Project put on by the Damariscotta River Association. Each September for the past two years, we traveled to the shores of the Great Salt Bay and studied Native American culture with John Bear Mitchell, associate director of the USM Wabanaki Center in Orono. We constructed several Penobscot summer lodges and created a village along the estuary, similar to ones that existed over 5,000 years ago. We learned how to build each lodge using traditional techniques with natural materials, gathered from the DRA lands. There were several different designs: there was the A frame, the Dome, and the Long House. These summer shelters were used exclusively for sleeping. We plan to use the knowledge that we received to build our own summer lodges out on the preserve.
