Kate Barnes is the daughter of Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth, two other well-known Maine writers. Barnes lives on a farm in Appleton, Maine.
Kate Barnes is the author of two published books of poetry: Crossing the Field (1992-1996) and Where the Deer Were (1994-2000). Several of her poems, which frequently have a Maine theme, have also been published in various poetry journals. She has given poetry readings and workshops around the state.
Ms Barnes was appointed first Poet Laureate of Maine by Governor King in 1996. She served until 2000. As Poet Laureate, she wrote the poem "Echoes From the Land" about Maine (http://www.mainearts.com/echoes.html).
