The French & Indian Wars

French/Indian War Powder Horn

(From http://www.state.vt.us/vhs/precious/phorn60.htm)

The French and Indian War started in 1689 and ended in 1763.  It wasn’t the French fighting the Indians, but it it was the French fighting the English. Good relations between the French and the English did not not last.  Maine entered war during the King Phillip’s War because the French were very close to the border of Canada. Many people that were on the English side were from Massachusetts.  Maine was still part of Massachusetts during the French and Indian War.  The first permanent structure was Fort Western, which was used as a supply base during the French and Indian Wars. Augusta was a very important place during the wars.  The Indians helped the French instead of the English but they lost just the same.  The Indians burned many towns but the Mainers kept re-building.

But in the end the English WON the battle!
