Revolutionary  War

In 1775 Maine started to fight the British in the Revolutionary War. As a result of the Revolutionary War, the people who framed the constitution realized our towns and citizens needed protection with a strong militia. So the militia cause became the start of today’s National Guard. Maine American Military leader Benedict Arnold brought a big expedition 120 miles up the Kennebec river. In 1764, in Maine there were 25,000 settlers plus 50 towns! But England was in debt. There were taxes on everything that England provided to Mainers. In 1774 Patriots burned English tea, this was called the “York Tea Party”. In 1775 Mainers attacked a English ship called Margaretta , first they shot the captain then the good crew that was controlling the Margaretta surrendered. The English attacked Portland and they also shelled Maine from their English ships. No people died when the British attacked,  but 400 buildings were destroyed in the city of Portland. In the war 6000 people fought, 1000 people died, and 5000 people survived. 1000 people died along with George Washington, and lots of supplies were gone to waste. The colonists won the war and began to establish a new country, the United States!
