The Acadians

The Acadians are French. They came down from Nova Scotia to Maine. The Acadian French was established in St. David, Maine in 1785.  Acadia is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.  Forced out by the English in 1775, some went to Louisiana.  Others resettled in the lower St. John Valley of Maine. This area was good for farming because of the rich soil and open spaces. They traveled through the northern region of Maine and settled to farm. The towns the Acadians settled in were Madawaska, Fort Kent and Van Buren. They would hunt and fish. They also would grow buckwheat which they made into ploys, which is a thin squishy bread.
