Paper Mills in the 1800's

In the late 1800’s a new industry opened in Maine.  It was paper products.  Paper mills were built near rivers to help them run.  They used water power to make the machines run.  The French Canadians came across the border to find jobs and people came from Ireland too.  In the middle 1800’s people started to move away for free land to farm.  People would lose their jobs because of the invention of the steamboat.  But paper mills would continue going strong.
