You are eleven years old .Your brother
is two. Your mother is holding you so tightly that you can hear how
fast her heart is beating. She is scared and so are you. You
are at a slave auction. You are going to be sold. (From the story of Harriet
Beecher Stowe)
Slaves from the Southern
States tried to run away and live on their own, but most of the time they
got caught. They would get treated like they were dogs. They had to learn
commands; they had to do what their masters commanded like if they said,
“Go clean up the barn yard or go plant crops,” they would have to do it.
In Maine, slavery was illegal and many Mainers were sympathetic towards the slaves. Harriet Beecher Stowe, an author who lived in New England and for a time in Maine, wrote about the injustices of slavery. Some people thought she started the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Beecher Stowe were against slavery.

Slavery was a major cause of the Civil War. About 73,000 Mainers fought for the North in the war. Two of the men from Maine were generals, General Oliver Howard and General Joshua Chamberlain from Brewer. About 7,500 Mainers died in the war. In 1865 the war ended with the North winning. The victory freed the slaves.
