Settlers in the 1800's.

Some people settled in Maine for jobs.  Between 1868 and 1900 paper mills opened in several towns when more people started coming to Maine.   People also came  to be part of the the lumbering industry.
Then, people discovered the steam boat, which hurt the lumber industries.
The Abanaki Tribes were moved out of their land and were put into reservations.
Another reason why settlers came to Maine was because we had so many resources, such as trees, fields, lobsters and blueberries.
Some of the women worked by making cloth.  This happened in the mid-1800ís.

By 1820, 300,000 people lived in Maine.
Maine has so much beauty and activities that no wonder so many people came.

Ship building started in 1880 at the Bath Iron Works.  Maineís shipbuilders started to make steel ships.
