Aroostook County In the 2000's
Aroostook County is known
as the potato country! The potatoes are grown for potato soup, hash browns,
french fries, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, potato pancakes and potato
salad! The potato arrived in the colonies in 1621, as a gift from the governor
of Bermuda. The potato was planted by the settlers because it was a familiar
food. Today Americans eat about 144 pounds of potatoes per person each
year. They were also the first vegetable grown in space. The potato's nickname
"spud” is from a three pronged fork used in Ireland to dig the vegetables.
The round white potato is the most common potato grown in Maine.
Farmers in “the county” grow potato
crops in their fields. The soil in Aroostook county is very rich and grows
beautiful potatoes!

Aroostook County has some of the most popular places to snowmobile. People like to ride on the mountains and see bright orange sunsets and gorgeous scenery. They have a lot of snowmobile clubs in “The County.”

Many people who live in “the county” like to fly rod fish, ice fish and fish in the rivers and lakes. Salmon are very popular to fish for in Aroostook. Salmon mothers come from the Atlantic Ocean to lay their eggs in St. John and St. Croix rivers.

The reason why they call Aroostook
“The County” is because it is so big. It is the largest county in
Maine. It could almost become a state. It has hundreds of rivers and lakes
surrounding it, with very few towns. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway runs
through the county as well. The people who live in “the county” need to
be very self sufficient. The only major road that runs near “the county”
is
RT.11.
