Migration
In the 2000's
*

Many people migrate from city to city, state to state and country to country. All over the world people are migrating for cultural beliefs, to escape famines , disasters, wars, lack of money , and for better jobs.

Portland has been one of Maine's most important cities ever since it was founded in the 18th century. It is located on the ocean and many people have moved there for the resources including seafood, transportation, and the many jobs available.
In the last couple of years people have migrated to Portland and other areas of Maine . Famines in African countries like Ethiopia and Somalia ; the wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iran, are all reasons for the migration.
Once the people arrive in Maine they have many cultural differences to deal with. They must look for housing, jobs, and support from strangers. Making friends with local people can be very challenging because of the difference in culture.
They must also deal with the climate and weather. Maine has long cold winters and short summers. The clothing needs are different from where they may have come from.

People deal with many challenges migrating to new geographic regions.   Migration may lead to greater opportunities. People move to meet a variety of needs including religious freedoms and resources. But in doing so, they face many challenges. Hopefully, they are enjoying a better life by migrating.
