Red Paint And Oyster People
Culture

The Beginning

About 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age, early man migrated to Maine. They were some of the first people in North America. They were the ancestors of the Indians who were living in Maine when the European settlers came over.

The Red Paint people and the Oyster people were stone age hunters. They used heavy stone tools.

The Red Paint People used a preservative called red ochre which they rubbed on dead peoples skin. That’s why they were called the Red Paint People.

The Red Paint people lived along the coast of Maine for hundreds of years.  They disappeared and it is a still a mystery. Some people believe that the coast of Maine sunk under tidal waves caused by earthquakes.

The Oyster People arrived in Maine 1,000 years after the disappearance of the Red Paint People. These people ate oysters and clams. They left behind huge mounds of shells. Today there is a shell mound on Penobscot Bay at a site called Turner Farm on North Haven Island .
