The French and Indian War
1689-1763

The French and Indians fought the English people because France ruled Canada and Canada bordered all of Northern North America, including Maine. England wanted the land which created a conflict. The English fought against France with the help of some Maine settlers. Thousands and thousands of Mainers were fighting France in the war at the time to control the land. William Pepperall, an English settler who lived in Kittery in 1745 fought in the war. He lead soldiers to Nova Scotia in Canada where they killed almost every French soldier that was at one of the French forts.
In 1755 the English were starting to remove the French settlers from Nova Scotia where they were had been living. The Indians that were living in Canada pitched in and helped fight the war with the French. They wanted the English and the new settlers to leave their land. Finally in 1763 the wars ended and France lost. The English people were now the new masters of New England and most of North America.

But shortly after the end of the French and Indian war the Revolutionary War began. This conflict was because the country of England and the new settlers both wanted North America and its resources. Again, because of this tension over land and resources, another bloody war was fought.
