Native Americans and White Settlers
Come To Maine

When the Europeans came to make a new life, Native Americans were here first. The Europeans wanted to trick the Native Americans by signing a treaty. The Native Americans signed the treaty but didn’t know they were giving up their homeland. The Europeans settled and invited more people to come. By the 1700s most Native Americans didn’t have anywhere to live so they were forced to leave Maine.

Thousands of years before the 1700s, the Native Americans had to come to Maine because of the ice age. When they got to Maine they collected oysters. That’s how they became the Oyster People. They fished, hunted, and gathered food and wood and water .
Some people think the Vikings came to Maine in the 1100s. Others think the Native Americans might have fought the Vikings and won the battle because they had better weapons. Nobody knows for sure.

In the 1600s, the white settlers came to trade in Maine with the Native Americans. The white settlers traded food, water, weapons, and tools for fur. When the white settlers came they also brought diseases. We lost 80 percent of the tribes.
