Events Leading to the Revolutionary War

King George had been taking over country's all over the world and was very powerful. Over the years people got tired of being under the control of King George so they started to fight back!

The war started in 1774. As the first seven months went by, the colonists had captured more than 1,300 British ships. Although the British lost their ships, King George kidnapped over 9,000 people to work for him.

In 1775 the British attacked what is now Portland and destroyed over 400 buildings!
A general named Benedict Arnold was against King George and Arnold was one of the best generals and won everything he started. Later Arnold betrayed us and started to work for the British. He was killed about ten years later.

Finally in 1783 the war ended and a peace treaty was made in Paris and the war was over. The colonists had won! The colonists were free from England and ruled what is now North America.

The Revolutionary War was a reason Maine eventually became a state. The difference was King George wanted to own everything and the colonist wanted freedom. This created conflict between the colonist.
