Native American Culture in Maine 1800’s

The Native Americans had lots of uses for their resources. They used the rivers and streams for fishing, food, water, and transportation. In the woods they gathered berries and hunted animals such as deer and bear. They also planted gardens. They didn’t waste their food. They ate the meat and used the skins for clothes and making their houses.
The Native Americans were farmers, fishermen, and hunters. Out in the woods they used any good maple stick they could find to make arrows. The women did all the cooking and cleaning and they often built the houses. When the men brought back the kill the women had to clean the animal. The men did the fighting, hunting, and bartering with the white men.
In the Native Americans’ culture they believed the land was there for all to use. The differences in the beliefs about the land ownership between the Native Americans and Europeans culture caused tension and conflict.
