Letters to Rebecca

ben snowboarding

“Fear!” I thought as I got off the chair lift. My stomach was grumbling and I felt like I was going to be sick. I was on my snowboard for only the second time and was heading toward Bobcat, a green square trail at Lost Valley Ski Area. Green square trails are supposed to be the easiest way down the mountain.

Whoosh! I pushed off and headed down. My snowboard picked up speed, and I was suddenly going 20 m.p.h. My board was spinning around in a circle like a 360 turn, and I felt totally out of control. I flew past my sister. I felt like I was going very fast but I actually felt kind of happy about it.

Suddenly, my board turned to the left and I almost hit a pine tree. I saved myself from crashing by turning to the right and barely missing the tree. I continued down the trail at a blazing speed. At some point I came upon a jump. I took it and rose into the air about 4 inches off the ground. I landed roughly.

I was feeling pretty good about myself. My fear was absolutely gone and I had a big grin on my face. I was really excited!

When I reached the end of the trail I tried to stop but snow flew into my face and I couldn’t see. I fell face first into the snow. My face tingled from the cold, wet snow! I stood up and unlocked my bindings, and sat my snowboard on the deck of the lodge.

I ran inside the lodge feeling grateful! I was now a snow boarder! My sister came in right behind me and she said, “Do you want something from the snack bar?” She wasn’t mad that I beat her. She was just happy I was still alive! I had snow boarded down the hill all by myself. We celebrated with a refreshing Mountain Dew, a tasty dough boy, and a chewy chocolate chip cookie.

Now that I’m a real snow boarder, I am looking forward to taking bigger jumps and trying the rails.
