Language Arts in Grade 5: Fifth grade is an important year for students as they prepare to transition to middle school. Students make the transition from learning to read and write to using reading and writing to learn and show what they know.
Fifth graders are developing their personalities as literate individuals. They have strong opinions on the types of text they prefer to read but are required to try something new or challenging. There is a focus on note taking while reading historical fiction and non-fiction. Students explore who they are as writers and observe the world around them through writing in writer’s notebooks. In addition, students learn how to structure their writing to show what they know or to share an opinion.
