Third Grade Newsletter

Dear Parents and Third Graders,
It is hard to believe that the school year is almost at the end. I would like to thank you for all your support. The students and I have seen some wonderful academic progress. We have worked hard for this progress.
Did you know that research shows that students, who read 40 minutes a day over the summer, will show measurable reading improvement in the fall? Students, who read 20 minutes a day, will maintain their previous year’s growth. Students, who read less, will regress. Wow! Because of this summer regression, which teachers usually see, I recommend that the children read every day, and the more the better. Keep a record of the books read.
I also would like to suggest that each child keep a journal and
write in it as much as possible. Again the goal should be every day. The journal can be about daily activities, stories, or poems.
Bring the reading list and journal to school in the fall. Next
year’s fourth grade teacher will look forward to seeing them.
Math skills can continue to improve during the summer by using Rainforest Math, the computer program available through the school’s website, www.link75.org/his/ (look under web resources.)
Enjoy the summer break, but don’t forget to read, write and do some math! Let’s not lose any of the year’s hard work.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Smith
