The middle school curriculum provides each student with a minimum six week intensive program in the Visual Arts during both the seventh and eighth grades. Throughout the program, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media will be explored. Students are encouraged to become aware of the elements and principles of design within their own work and the work of various artists and cultures. A major goal is that every student will adopt a more systematic, intellectual approach to making, appreciating, and understanding the visual arts.
A cumulative goal of the Visual Arts program is to strengthen each students ability to value their individual ideas and to focus their energies toward creating their personal best within the format of various projects. A deliberate effort is made to integrate the visual arts into other areas of the middle school curriculum through interdisciplinary projects. Ideally, students will enter the high school program with an appreciation of the visual arts and a desire to participate in and enjoy the arts as a lifelong interest.
