Woodside Elementary Physical EducationOverview for 2006 - 2007
As with all other content areas here at Woodside Elementary the Physical Education focuses on the Maine Learning Results. The curriculum is designed starting with the an activity, then modified as needed for different ability levels. When a student has a strength in a particular activity he/she is encouraged to push themselves to increase their skills. Students are asked to wear sneakers and appropriate clothing on the days they have Physical Education Classes for their personal safety as well as that of others.Below is a quick overview of some of the activities that your student(s) will be participating in this year and how they relate to the Maine Learning Results.
Kindergarten & First Grade:The focus for these students will be in motor stations where students are exposed to 4 to 5 activities each class. These stations give students a lot of movement time while working on balance, overhand throw, spatial awareness, eye-hand coordination, fitness, turn taking and more.
Second & Third Grade:The second and third grade students have moved away from motor stations and get into a more unit based curriculum. Each unit will focus on a variety of skills including striking (batting, hockey skills), throwing, soccer skills, basketball skills, movement patterns, spatial awareness, and more emphasis on physical fitness.
Fourth & Fifth Grade:The older kids in our school will continue to work on items in the Maine Learning Results through a variety of activities. The emphasis is on giving the student the idea of how to participate in a given activity. The following is a list of activities the fourth and fifth graders will be doing:
Fall: Frisbee Skills, Presidential Fitness Test, Golf, Team Games
Winter: Basketball, Badmitton, Snow Shoes, Speed Stacks, Circus Arts, Bowling
Spring: Baseball, Volleyball, Track & Field, Capture the Flag
It is also important that your child gets exercise outside of physical education classes at least 3 times per week. This will start them of on the right foot for a healthy lifestyle that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's participation or activity in Physical Education please do not hesitate to contact me at school via email or phone.
