HEALTHY SCHOOL SNACKS
Here are some suggestions for healthy snacks to send with your children. Try including your child in the decision process as this will increase the likelihood they will eat the snack you prepare.
Great snack ideas that kids love:
‑Granola bars‑ look for low fat and low sugar, such as Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars, Nature Valley Chewy Trail mix bars and Quaker chewy granola bars
‑Mini bagel or whole‑grain crackers, such as Triscuit, with cheese
‑Celery sticks with peanut butter
‑Trail mix‑ raisins, nuts, cereal, dried fruit
‑Apple slices
‑Banana
‑Fresh strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries
‑Yogurt‑ look for brands that are low fat and moderate in sugar (no more than 30 grams of sugars in a 6 oz. cup) and high in calcium(at least 25% of daily value in a 6 oz. cup), e.g. Danimals Drinkable low‑fat yogurt, Go‑Gurt by Yoplait, Stonyfield farm yogurt, Dannon, and Horizon, and similar store brands.
‑Pudding
‑Applesauce
‑Fruit cups(canned in fruit juice)
‑Pretzels(try low sodium) and hummus
‑Graham crackers and peanut butter
‑Animal crackers
‑ Whole grain cereal with or without milk, such as Cheerios, Grape‑Nuts, Raisin Bran, Frosted Mini‑Wheats and Wheaties
‑Orange sections
‑Raisins
‑Grapes
‑Baby carrots or cucumbers with dip
‑Sliced red, green, or yellow peppers
‑Muffins
‑Brown Rice cakes
‑Pita bread with hummus, cheese or meat
‑Tortilla chips with salsa
‑Melon balls
‑Turkey or ham rollups‑roll sliced meat with a piece of cheese
LIMIT the amout of sugary soft drinks(soda, lemonade, and juice drinks). Sugary drinks displace healthy choices of water and low‑fat milk in addition to increasing the amount of calories consumed which can lead to obesity.
