Title One

Teacher: Michael Estes

Title I is a federal program for children who can benefit from additional help with reading, writing and math. The amount of money that the school receives depends on the number of students who are on free or reduced lunch. Because of this it is important for qualifying families to sign up for free or reduced lunch even if it is not used. Title I money helps all students in the school, not just those who are on free or reduced lunch programs. Title I money pays for reading and math specialists, for turors, for computer, for books and for supplies and materials.

Title I teachers plan or assist reading, writing and math activities with the classroom teacher and work in the classroom during direct instruction, focusing on the needs of Title I students. In some cases, students are taken from the regular classroom to work on specific skills. Placement in a Title I program is based on end-of-grade reading comprehension scores and recommendation of the classroom teacher.
