File JHCE: School Based Health Center
In order to provide access to preventive and urgent medical care services and to provide behavioral health service to students for whom they would otherwise be unavailable,
M.S.A.D. No. 75 will offer a School Based Health Center (SBHC) at Mt. Ararat High School. The Board believes that this will reduce current health barriers to learning. The SBHC will work in concert with traditional health and guidance services already in place at the schools.
The SBHC will provide a range of services based on needs determined by community assessments, student and parent satisfaction surveys. The SBHC Advisory Committee will approve the scope of services. The SBHC will follow preventive service guidelines recommended by the American Medical Association (Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services) and those recommended by the U.S. Department of Maternal and Child Health (Bright Futures). It will incorporate a focus on student resiliency and protective factors.
Parent signatures are required for students less than 18 years of age to enroll in the SBHC. The SBHC intends to foster parental involvement in the health care of their child (ren). Students will always be encouraged to talk to their parents/guardians about confidential concerns. In accordance with Federal and State Laws, some services may be provided without parental permission or notification. These services include reproductive healthcare, sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and treatment services, substance use treatment f and mental health services. In certain situations, there are limits to a minor’s right to confidentiality.
Confidentiality is not possible in cases where:
- there is suspected child abuse or neglect
- a minor is a threat to themselves or others
- the health care provider believes that confidentiality would cause harm or limit their ability to provide medical care
Medical records at the School Based Health Center are private and confidential by Law. SBHC Records are to be kept in locked cabinets separate from traditional school health records.
